I am new to gimp but thought I would give a quick tip.

    First download Gimp. <a class="postlink" href="http://www.gimp.org/downloads/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.gimp.org/downloads/</a>

    Step 1
Type in the text using the text tool. Make it any color. The font I am using is Marketing Script.

    Step 2
Duplicate the layer as many times as looks right moving the layer 1 px. up and to the left. Then merge the layers that made the 3d effect. (NOT THE ORIGINAL TEXT LAYER).

    Step 3
Right click the 3d layer and click alpha to selection in the drop down menu. Make a new layer and pull the gradient Foreground to Background. Make sure White is the foreground color and black is the background color. Lower the opacity to personal preference.

    Step 4 Optional
Use the burn tool which is the last tool in the toolbox menu to make more shadows and the dodge tool (same tool just change the tool settings below the toolbox) to make highlights.
