Gimp Won’t Run

Postby mvazquez » Mon Oct 05, 2009 5:25 pm

Hello,
I’m a long time Mac user (graphic design) not without some small aptitude for techie stuff but having trouble running Gimp. Recently updated to OS-X 10.5.8. Downloaded the latest from the XQuartz site X11 2.4.0. Would gladly use earlier version of Gimp or X11 if it is stable on the system. Thank you all in advance for your help! 8)

Ran Console and got the message below. Honestly not sure what it all means but willing to learn if a solution can be found:

Opps,
Forgot to mention, Gimp 2.6.7.

Also, I launched Gimp while X11 was already running and Console came up with this:

...as I've answered on another thread, there's no need to install X11 from XQuartz. Leopard 10.5.8 is sufficient.

It seems to me, that you've donwloaded some old version of XQuartz, which has a "feature" to automatically shutdown X11 if the client (here GIMP) will not start very quickly.

And you've installed an old version of GIMP. The current on is available on http://gimp.lisanet.de It's 2.6.7-pa, which fixes the "huge font size" bug. Make sure to delete ~/Library/Application Support/Gimp in you home directory, before you install and start the updated GIMP 2.6.7-p1

And, to get a well defined state, I suggest that you install the Combo update of 10.5.8, then delete ~/Library/Application Support/Gimp an install GIMP...

Well,
I followed your advice. GImp still won’t run—though I can either “hide” or “quit” Gimp. The version of Gimp I had originally was the current update but I did delete it and the XQuartz just in case. Leopard 10.5.8 is now in a well defined state. I did notice that there was nothing to delete in /Library/Application Support/Gimp. Not sure if that is significant but I thought I’d mention it.

I greatly appreciate your help. Not sure where to go from here. ???

if you don't have a directory /Library/Application Support/Gimp, then you didnt' have GIMP from my site http://gimp.lisanet.de

Please download GIMP from there. All hints refer to this version.

Just to make sure:
- What version of X11 are you running? (start X11. it's in /Application/Utilities and select the X11 menu -> About)
- Install GIMP 2.6.7-p1 from http://gimp.lisanet.de

Double click on GIMP's icon and please wait. The first time it will take a while because GIMP is lloking for fonts on your system. Please be patient.

If you have a "clean" Leopard 10.5.8 and downloaded GIMP as mentioned above, it should run. If not... I don't know why...

BTW, quiting GIMP is easy.

Just click on GIMP's "close" button, GIMP will close the image window. If no image is open, GIMP itself will shut down. The "close" button is, you know, the shiny little red "bubble" in the upper left corner.

Ok, just in case, I re-downloaded Gimp from your link. Installed, again, and launched it. Results are similar to the image above. Waited quite a while but nothing new occurred. Just to be thorough. The version of X11 is from:

Welcome to the XQuartz project
Intro
The XQuartz project is an open-source effort to develop a version of the  X.org X Window System that runs on Mac OS X. Together with supporting libraries and applications, it forms the X11.app that Apple has shipped with OS X since version 10.5.
Latest Release
2009.08.14
X11.pkg version 2.4.0 released
X11 2.4.0
Released: 2009.08.14
This release contains Xquartz-1.5.3-apple14.
Installation
Download X11-2.4.0.dmg, and open it to install with Leopard's Installer. As of 2.2.0, you do not need to have Leopard's X11 package installed (but it is alright if you do).
Important Notices
OS-X Requirements
OS-X 10.5.8 or later is required to install this package.

Then I went over to Apple which directed me via their link back to where I started.

XQuartz on Mac OS Forge
With Leopard, Apple is actively working with the Open Source community to improve our X11 implementation via the XQuartz project on Mac OS Forge. The goal is for all such changes to be part of future X.org releases, as well as future Mac OS X updates.

As far as I understand it, now I’ve been to the right places and downloaded the right things. If I’m missing something I apologize. BTW I still don’t see Gimp in Library/Application Support/?? This is very strange since I’ve followed your process. How is this support file supposed to be generated?

Picture 1.png
I attached the Get Info for X11. Is it supposed to say X11 version 2.0 when the link on the XQuartz site is “X11-2.4.0.dmg”?

I'm sorry, but you didn't follow my advice.

I've suggest that you install the Combo Update of Mac OS X 10.5.8 to get a well defined state. Leopard 10.5.8 is shipped with X11. You don't need to install X11 from XQuartz.

now you've installed XQuartz 2.4.0. This will work as long as you stay on Leopard 10.5.8. If you upgrade your Mac to SnowLeopard. XQuartz 2.4.0 will not work anymore.

So I'd really advice you to install the Combo Update of 10.5.8 to get a well defined state.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL866

And please, do _not_ install XQuartz 2.4.0 !

About "~/Library/Application Support/Gimp":
The "~" is important. This is a shortcut for your home directory. I quite sure that you searched in "/Library/Application Support"

Please go to you home directory. There you find "Library", dive into it, and go to "Application Support". Delete the directory "Gimp".

And are you sure, you've downloaded the lasest GIMP 2.6.7-p1? The dmg file you've downloaded should be named "GIMP-2.6.7-p1-Leopard-universal.dmg". The "p1" is important. Only this release has the bug fixed.

If you did all the above mentioned things. GIMP will run.

Now double click on GIMP's icon, and be patient! It will take a while to start GIMP for the first time.

I had the same problem and followed your instructions. Gimp now starts but crashes with the following message:

Has anyone an hint on how to replace that library without installing a newer version of this x11 environment?

Thanks

- run a Software Update to get the latest X11 version fro Apple.
- do NOT install XQuartz
