Yes i know its oversharpened... thats kinda the point... give it that crisp look.
I prolly failed a bit on the crisp to smooth transition on the smudging.

Text is not a requirement. Until you master everything else, text should rarely even be attempted in my opinion.

Could, yes, but learn how to properly implement depth with "natural" things in a tag, the environment (stock, render, etc) before adding text.

That being said, the smudge isn't bad but try to make the smudging smoother and longer. Don't use too big of a brush.

Haha, I know exactly what you mean.

Anyhow, I personally like to use <hard round, opac:100, rate: 90, apply jitter: yes and no> after I've set down the general values and colors. Start with a big brush and gradually get smaller; large for compo and small for details/ overall shapes.
