cant add drop-shadow to text on gif image.

Hi,
I want to add text with a drop-shadow to a gif image. The text is inserted correctly but when I select filters > light and shadow the drop-shadow (and all the other options apart from apply lenses) is greyed out. If I try filters > script-fu > refresh scripts and then select drop-shadow I get error messages about:

and

Plug-In 'Drop Shadow' left image undo in inconsistent state, closing open undo groups.

If I open a new file drop-shadow works perfectly but I cant copy it.
How do I add text with a drop-shadow to a gif image?

You can't
Gif does not support trasparency other then on or off.
So drop shadow won't work.
Even if it did you would only have a totaly solid shadow.

You say you can open a new image, well save it as gif and then try

If you want to blur you can copy whatever you are making a drop shadow of.
Then lock alpha channel --> Fill with black --> Blur until desired effect appears

Is there a special reason you use .gif ?

Hi Thanks for the reply, no there's no reason for using gif format.
Is there a format i can use where i can apply a drop-shadow to my text (and save it).

It might be because the gif's colors are indexed. Image, Mode, RGB should help you out.

Then save as

png

or jpeg, but png has the best quality so go with that!
