 Installing Gimp Brushes
This question is always asked again and again, so i wanted to post this and make it sticky - To install Gimp brushes in windows
place your brushes at this path. C:/program files/Gimp2.0/share/gimp/2.0/brushes Then when you start up GIMP, it will find these new brushes, and you can use them with the brush or pencil tools.
here is a video that shows you how to to install the brushes http://gimp-tutorials.net/node/62 How to install Brushes In Gimp in windows
- installing :Gimp brushes in Gnome by Yossi
if you are in gnome its simple. Open your home folder (places menu) notice that all files starting with a dot are invisible files, to make them visible just press "ctrl + H" after you have done that you will see several folders and files. JUst navigate to the folder named ".gimp-2.2" and then to the folder "brushes" inside that folder copy the brushes you need by copy paste (ctrl + c , ctrl +v) or drag and drop :].
Installing Gimp Brushes on a Mac by Shadowraith -Go to Computer/finder (Command+c) -Go to a place where you would like your Gimp brushes to be saved, for example Documents or Pictures. -Make a new folder there called Gimp Brushes. -Open up the Gimp and go to File>Preferences -Go down to the bottom and click on Folders then Brushes. -Next click on the New Folder icon then browse for your Gimp Brushes folder. -And your done, hope this helps and this technique can be applied on the Mac for downloaded fonts, gradients, scripts etc.
BTW: on a terminal to see the folder "ls -a" and to copy use the "cp" command like "cp -vi folder/from/archive/to/copy.gbr .gimp-2.2/brushes/" this could laso help this can help you http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/cli.html
- Regardless of what Os your using droping the gimp brushes into /.gimp-2.2/brushes folder should do the trick.
A common Installation Problems that New users face is when you download them and extract them, they still don't show up in gimp. The reason for this, is when you extract them, it makes a new folder, what you have to do is go to my computer, go to your gimp brushes folder, and *move* them into your regular gimp brushes folder.

 Re: Installing Gimp Brushes
The above technique for Mac is simpler, but may get disorganized. You can always navigate to your GIMP icon in applications, right-click, click 'Show Package Contents' and from there navigate to /Contents/Resources/Share/gimp/(GIMP version) and there are all your brushes/scripts folders.

 Re: Installing Gimp Brushes
Hello all. I'm brand new to Gimp and I'm having problems getting certain brushes. I can download and use certain brushes with no problem . However, when I try to get others, all I have when they're finished downloading is an image of what the brush looks like or the "Windows cannot open this file" prompt. I'm completely baffled and any help would be awesome! Thanks
