Copy Image and Paste into Gimp

Postby Barbiegirl » Wed Sep 26, 2012 10:32 am

This happens many times. (WindowsVista FF15)

Original Image has a transparent background.
Image

Rightclick on an image on webpage > Copy Image > Ctrl+V Paste into paint.net.
It pastes correctly with transparent background.
Image

Rightclick on an image on webpage > Copy Image > Ctrl+V Paste into Gimp.
It pastes without transparency. Shows as black background.
Image>Mode>set at RGB or Index doesn't remove the black bg.
Alpha to transparency does not remove the black bg.
Image

? What can I do to have it appear without the black bg the way it does when pasted into paint.net?
Thankyou.

You could either download the image (Rightclick > Save as) and then open it up with Gimp, or, an even easier option, drag and drop the image into a Gimp window. This works perfectly fine for me. You could also copy the image URL and open it with Gimp via File > Open URL blabla, there's many ways, but drag and drop should be the easiest.

Arzoroc
Thankyou for the response Arzoroc!
Yes I am aware of those other ways to insert the image... but I don't want to have to save the image first because you have to dig through files and type in the title. That slows me down and bothers me.
I just want to grab it from the webpage, paste into Gimp for Editing, and if I like the results of my editing I can save it or discard it or take a snippet or screenshot of it to send to someone or post.
I have a screenshot program that grabs the imgur png url, so that I don't have to save it, I can just send it quick.

I would like to just do it the easy quick way that I can do with paint.net.
Is there no way to do remove the blackbg after pasting from webpage via "Copy Image"?
I don't understand why there is this black bg result with Gimp and not with Paint.net.

Thankyou Arzoroc !

Ooooooooooooh! I see now what you were saying.
Yes this is great. Quick and easy.

Copy the image URL and open it with Gimp via File > Open URL blabla
(which is "Copy Image Location" and open it with Gimp File > Open Location.
Oh I didn't know about that and sort of missed what you said about that.
Thankyou very much Arzoroc! That was a big help for me.

You're welcome. What about the drag and drop? Click on an image, hold down the mouse, drop it into Gimp, and you should be fine.
Sorry about the wrong name for the path, I'm using a German Gimp version so I do not know every English filter/path name.

Oooooooohhhh !
I knew that you could DragDrop into Gimp a Saved Picture from files, and I thought that is what you were talking about. And that is not what I wanted because I don't want to "save as" the image first.

So...
I cannot DragDrop into Gimp because as I grab the image from the webpage, Gimp disappears and minimizes to the taskbar.
DragDrop into the Gimp in the Taskbar will not accept.

Image

So yes it does work great DragDrop from the webpage thankyou and it is definitely the very easiest and best way to do it !
But... I must first Minimize/Restore the browser, resize it smaller, so that I can slide it over from the webpage onto the Desktop where gimp still shows. It's actually more complicated then that because I have "No Titlebar" addon on my system so I must first disable that to get access to Minimize/Restore browser.

I am on Gimp2.6.
? Is there a way to keep Gimp appearing on the webpage without minimizing to taskbar when I lose focus of Gimp and focus on the webpage?

Well, I'm on Windows 7 and the way you tried works fine for me. Once I hover my mouse over the Gimp icon in the taskbar, the Gimp window pops up and I can drop the image in there.

The only other way I could think of is the following:
- Click and hold the image
- Press Alt+Tab at the same time until the Gimp window opens
- Drop

This again works for me on Win7, you should try it.

Yes that worked!!!
I Dragged it to the Taskbar and the Gimp popped up and I continued to drag it into Gimp and it inserted with transparent bg.
I don't know what happened before... maybe some other window was covering over it or something.
But it definitely works now with that method.
Solved. Case closed.
Thanks very much Arzoroc for all the help !
