Engraved in Stone?

I am trying to make a stone (like a tombstone or the Ten Commandments) with text etched or engraved into it using GIMP but am having trouble getting the text to look like it is going down. I am getting very good using Bump Map to make the text pop out of the stone but when clicking Invert Bumpmap all it appears to do is move the light source.

I have tried using Shaped Gradients to make the text from white to black or black to white but the result after a bump map is always bumping out. How do I reverse the direction? I have seen a Photoshop tutorial on how to do it and it is the difference of checking a box with that program.

Try embossing it, then inverting the bump map then... see what happens.

Does this look like it is bumping out or does it look like it is sketched in to the stone?


I used a Gradient: Transparent to Black (custom), Shaped (Angular) on the text, sharpened it a couple times, then Bump Mapped it to the Slate background, added a Script-Fu Shadow Xach-Effect to darken the text with the highlight.

Maybe I have been staring at it for too long but it looks like it is going out still.

i tried to doing it my self but couldn't get it right. Rasim's idea might work i think.. i might give it a go.

it looks sorta bumped in but not as much as you'd like i don't think

I think it came to me last night. Don't bump the text, bump the area around the text.
Put the White text in the black field with a white background.
Give it a Gaussian Blur.
Bump map a new Slate layer.
Use a duplicate text layer to add a Script-Fu Xach-Effect highlight at X=0 Y=0 with opacity at 50.
