In the layers tab on GIMP 2, What does the link item meen

The small chains?
It means that you link the layers, and after you linked them every tool you use on one of the linked layers will apply to every linked layer. You can, for example, resize 10 layers at once by linking them all. Just remember to un-check the icon afterwards.
