Large menu fonts in image window

Postby SiRGadaBout » Sun May 03, 2009 7:23 pm

The menu text font size in image windows is inordinately large.

Running Gimp 2.6.5 on Leopard 10.5.6 with XQuartz 2.3.2.

Become aware of "defaults" Terminal command for modifying DPI in XQuartz FAQ:

However, using the Gimp-recommended DPI of 96 results in an unreasonably large font size, and increasing it to the MacBook Pro recommended size (see link above) results in an obviously ludicrously large size font; ditto 110 DPI (my approximate native DPI according to Gimp 2.6.6s Configuration utility). Obviously the secret is to reduce the DPI, but this seems counter-intuitive to me, and I'm unsure how this will affect image creation in Gimp.

Anyone care to illuminate me?

Thanks,

S.

My settings on a MBP 15.4" with Mac OS X 10.5.6 and XQuartz 2.3.2 (xorg-server 1.4.2-apple31):

Code: Select all
LeWitt:~ suv$ defaults read org.x.X11 | grep dpi
    dpi = 110;

I'm using the 'ProApp'-theme, slightly customized, with adjusted font-settings:
Code: Select all
LeWitt:~ suv$ cat ~/Library/Application\ Support/Gimp/gtkrc
#
# gtkrc for Gimp 2.6.5
#
# modified:  2009-02-22
#            suv@LeWitt.local
#

# this is Mac OS X default font
# Lucida Grande (System)
#gtk-font-name = "Lucida Grande 10"     # huge!
#gtk-font-name = "Lucida Grande 8"      # too big
#gtk-font-name = "Lucida Grande 7"      # seems ok
#gtk-font-name = "Lucida Grande 6"      # too small

# Helvetica (System)
#gtk-font-name = "Helvetica 8"
#gtk-font-name = "Helvetica 7"             # bold, smeared
#gtk-font-name = "Helvetica 6"

# Lucida (X11)
#gtk-font-name = "Lucida Bold 6"           # too small in palettes/toolboxes

# hint from theme "Small" gtkrc
#gtk-font-name = "sans 8"                  # looks like default w/ dpi=96
gtk-font-name = "Sans 7"                  # seams ok   <--- that's my favorite (I like a tiny UI font)
#gtk-font-name = "sans 6"                  # too small in height

It's confusing me too, but IMHO adjusting gtk-font-names/sizes in your gtkrc-file is better than a dpi-setting that does not correspond with your hardware.

I found additional info in this thread on X11-user mailing list: .
