NOTHING WORKS

Hi just got gimp on mac. nothing seems to work. for example i click on the brush tool and try to paint onto the layer and it doesnt let me. No circle shape comes up on the cursor just when i click on the canvas layer thing it stays blank and nothing happens. Any ideas?
