Newbie needs help: move???? Help please!

I used to use Adobe Photoshop quite a bit, and now I have a Mac, so I decided to try out Gimp.
The main problem I am having is that I can't figure out how to combine (or "photoshop") pictures. On Photoshop I could use the magnetic lasso tool to select the part of the image I wanted, and then drag it onto another image. I can't seem to figure out how to do this on Gimp. I have tried using the scissors tool, and then found out how to move the selection, but I can't move it to another picture. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I am not sure i understand what you mean, couldn't you just copy a selection from one image and then paste it onto another image?
