Mountain Lion? Don't panic. Just re-install XQuartz

Postby JoeEkaitis » Wed Jul 25, 2012 9:11 pm

With Mountain Lion, Apple says goodbye to X11 and refers you to the XQuartz project, so if you were using X11 to run GIMP, you have to install XQuartz instead. If XQuartz is installed before you upgrade to Mountain Lion, just download the latest installer and run it again to rebuild the links between GIMP and XQuartz.

I installed XQuartz after I upgraded to Mountain Lion. Gimp won't work at all now! Any suggestions?

After you install XQuartz, log out and back into OS X or just reboot your Mac. The first time you run GIMP there will be a longer than normal delay until XQuartz starts. After that, things should be back to normal.

Currently trying to install Mountain Lion. Wouldn't install on my bootup disc, so now I'm backing up so I can reinstall Lion... blabla. I expect better, Apple! Lol. Thanks for the tip, though!

I installed Mountain Lion, then XQuartz. Then logged out and back in.

Now when I start Gimp, a dialogue box pops up saying "Choose Application. Where is X11?" with a Finder window. Any ideas?

Look for XQuartz in Applications>Utilities.

Hej Joe

I've done as you suggest: re-installed XQuartz an re-booted. When I drag now a foto to GIMP, a Window appears with all Apps, asking "Where is X11?" XQuartz is placed in "Utilities" as well as in "Applications". After a while the window vanishes. Game over. Can you help?

Thanks from Switzerland to Southern California. Does it rally never rain there?

I've only tested this with GIMP 2.8.0 from http://gimp.lisanet.de/Website/Download.html. There's a new build for Mountain Lion.

1. Remove all versions of X11 (shouldn't be there after upgrading to Mountain Lion) and XQuartz from all locations like Applications and Utilities.

2. Download and install the newest version from http://xquartz.macosforge.org .

3. Reboot and start GIMP. When prompted to find XQuartz, look for it in Applications>Utilities. Dragging and dropping an image file starts a timer that won't let you finish finding XQuartz. After GIMP opens successfully, drag and drop should work.

And, yes, it rains in California. When it does, towing companies, auto body shops, chiropractors and personal injury attorneys rejoice.

"You make me happy!" It really works! But perhaps I was not patient enough first. It takes more than the time to drink a cup of coffee. Thank you very much!

It looks like the integrated browser causes the application to lockup on Mountain Lion.
