i have selected with the path tool now do i select from path ?

just to answer this in case someone happens upon it for a solution.

The best way to delete a selection is to use the freehand select tool which auto creates a selection for deletion or copying.

To delete or save from a path (turn path into selection)
After you create your path, hold down ctr key and click first starting point.
That turns your path into one whole connected path which you can move around as you like.
Go to your paths dialog and right click and select path to selection.
edit/cut to delete selection from that layer.
edit/copy/edit/paste as new layer to save it into another layer without deleting it from the copied layer.
