Yeah, I tried to make the back a bit darker but I couldn't get it right without it looking akward. So I just didn't worry about it. Haha.
Look up quick mask.
Duplicate the layer.
Create a gradient selection using the blend tool.
Change the options of the blend tool (Window > Dockable Dialogs > Tool Options).
In the tool options change the Shape.
Make a bi-linear or radial gradient on the quick mask layer.
Disable quick mask to turn it into a selection.
Delete the content of the selection of the duplicate layer (press delete key).
Change the layer mode and opacity to achieve desired effect.
Rinse and repeat with another duplicate layer. Mixing layer mode effects such as Screen, Overlay, and Multiply colors has an effect you're looking for.
