Before and After

I happened across this innocent '29 Ford pickup glue model picture during a search for something else and thought to myself "I wanna try chopping the roof on that".

I had never in my few short months of learning Gimp encountered any project featuring the automotive world. Getting tired of manipulations for parodies and satires, I was eager to try something different.

That looks really cool. Try adding some rust to the headlights, engine, and rims. And add some dirt to the tires.

Very well done, clean technique, and a good eye for the details.
I'd say the rust is not in the best spot atm though. There are parts of the car's surface that look perfectly intact, other parts however look pretty rusty.
How about adding a general rust/grunge overlay texture to give the car a generally old/used look? That would blend the current rust spots more, too.

I appreciate the comments and criticism. I'll accept it for what it is because the variations of rat rodding, street rodding and hot rodding probably aren't within the range of the average viewer. That said, the noticeable contrast (or should I say conflict) I created are legitimate because it drew your eyes to said issues.


I did go for a deep SoCal street rod look where builders use rustoleum and light or dark gray primers to add effect. Rust was never my target enhancement. There is no boundary for their techniques for weathering in their world. Equally, there is a sub-class while all the weathering is part of plan, the clean engines, polished trim and chrome trim and spit-shined whitewalls is all the rage.

As far as the center hinged hood, I guess the hinge could be removed.

Since I once wrote a small article on how to critique I should come back to that and assure you that your work is by no means bad. It is really only small details that need to be adjusted. I also want to add that I have only seen a lot of hot rods and only a few street rods (thanks to Detroit's Woodward Dream Cruise ) so, like you said I only know so much about the looks of said cars.

Totally awesome TPB. I wouldn't change anything honestly. You know it looks good if you only have the after to look at and don't realize that anything was added to it.
