Can you give a lil help to a GIMP beginner?

Hey everyone, I downloaded GIMP a few days ago and for getting started I'm reading photo edition tutorials on the GIMP official website. The tutorials have 10 years, some things are outdated, but I had no major problems...till today
I was trying to follow the instructions from "smart sharpening" tutorial (one of my favourites btw) but I really found it impossimble to go on :/ does anyone know how to "smart sharpen" (applying unsharp mask just to the luminosity channel/edges of the pic) a photo on GIMP 2.6?

I highly reommend the FX Foundry plugin for all those tasks. I use it ALOT and it' s really easy:)
Download: http://gimpfx-foundry.sourceforge.net/
It has several different sharpening methods and alot of cool effects:)
I suggest you try it out, it' s worth it.

At C:\Users\*Your username*\Gimp*Version*\Plug-ins

Smack em in there and you should be good to go.
If you want you can do as i and go real fancy and add them in their on folder.
Then adding that folder to the list of plugins folders.
But screw that if you don't want system

I believe it was DD that created a python script that separates the luminosity layer from an image.You can then sharpen the layer and recompose it.I forget the name of the plug-in though.

There is also Colors>Components>decompose - decompose using LAB
The new image will open with 3 layers...
Sharpen the luminosity layer (L layer), Filters>Enhance>Unsharp Mask , and Colors>Components>recompose.
The original opened image will recompose to the new image.

Use CTRL + z , and CTRL + y to see the change.
