I'm new to GIMP and just D/Led it 1/2 of the functions are greyed out like the filters etc. How do I get them?
I have looked through the forum for help in this matter, and did not find anything. Please parden me if this question has appeared elsewhere.

In order to use the filters that don't have a white font color, there must be an image or canvas to use it to (new file I think) and perhaps a specific selection of pixels with the use of paths and shape tools.
Get involved! (see UI Brainstorm!). Discuss or seek help from other Gimp users and developers. Be part of the Gimp mailing lists to create and receive daily topics.

Yes - create a new document (layer) first before choosing a filter.
Also if you open a gray scaled or indexed image you will not be able to use most filters until you go to Image>Mode and select RGB.
