Look at the attached screenshot. All I want is what's INSIDE the ellipse, what's INSIDE the OVAL shaped part. But when I paste I keep getting that whole rectangle. Please don't tell me I need to layer-mask, and erase, or layer-to-alpha-something-or-other and etc.. I've already tried a few of these and all I got was confused, not results. In this case I believe there must be some other process - Please tell me what to do, how it works.

As ONE (1) example: I created a blank template (transp. backgrnd) and pasted this selection into it. My pasted-in selection wound up appearing as what appears below as that entire rectangular region surrounding the elliptical area I desired. What the fu_?
I'm kinda p.o'd as you can tell.

    Thank You for any replies.

    -best wishes-

I think I inserted this image (below) correctly. If it doesn't appear, the url is [URL=http://imageshack.us/photo/my-...7.imageshack.us/img337/7506/001scx1.jpg[/img]

I think I see the problem. You set the selection mode to "Subtract from Current selection".
In the tool options, first line: "Mode" set it to the first icon, not the third. Then try again..

gonna move the selection mode over like you suggest,
but I'm pretty sure it was there (default) and I moved it
when I began trying to troubleshoot my problem. I've never
had a problem with free-select or the rectangular-select tools,
or for that matter the magic-scissors select tool (seldom use),
but then again this is my very first time ever trying to use this
tool. I'm gonna try what you said, see how it goes, after I pee :)

    thx,

yes i did try it. and it worked, thank you much. i don't know what my problem actually must have been the other night.

but i'm having a different new issue here. see the screenshot below?
what happened is that i took the bottom image and used the Round-Corners tool (seen front and center) and you'll see that I have the background option unchecked.
Now listen friend, closely to this please, because this is confusing the piss out of me. I created the image template for that final produced image (top one on screenshot) with a transparent background. I then deliberately made sure I unchecked the background option (seen below).

    What did I do wrong?

I've looked at that image in several image viewers and it now has a WHITE background.

    (screenshot follows text, below)

    I'm considering the following:
    1) Open the image as "Open as Layers"
    2) Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel

But I'm not familiar with this process.

I hate to keep bugging you good people but I am very green with this program.
Tell me what to do please, thank you very much in advance...
