Okay, so we've decided we'll do a magazine (or at least try)
So we have a few things we need to take care of.

    1. Name
    2. Length
    3. Format
    4. Content
    5. The Overseer
    6. The researchers
    7. The Editors

Just comment and post your ideas/opinions!

    Guitarist2012 (not sure)
    Baum (again, not sure)

    Re: A GIMP mag

Yes i have a subscription to a PDF mag called PlugsnPixels (all about new plugins and their uses)
That is a very good idea and it would bring fresh folks here too i bet. =)

It could contain fresh new Gimp plugins and their uses (amongst other things like new updates and contests, awesome tutorials...only the best).Have some images created with those new scripts too.
What could we call it though...Gimp & Scripts maybe? <----- stupid name

    Re: A GIMP mag

We had something like this going a while back, it was called "Gimp Newspress" I wore the signature for a while, but I'm guessing it died...

Anyways, it's a good idea! But we'd all have to work really hard to make it work.

    Re: A GIMP mag

Alright! lets try it and see if it works.

So lets put up an agenda. . . uhhh. . .

    Name?
    Length?
    Content?
    Monthly? Weekly?
    Who's in charge?

The Gimp and Scripts sounds good, for an expert, but it would take a scarier more complex view to people who are just getting into GIMP or are still beginners. I was thinking something cooler and smoother. . . like
The Monthly Gimper, or Even the Gimper? you know, to stay dedicated to the site.

For content, i was thinking of having a Gallery of Newest and Coolest, basically signatures, cool photomanips, and other stuff that people have done.
Then a Feature Tutorial, basically a great tutorial that alot have found useful.
    Maybe a featured artist?

    Just a few ideas

The Gimper sounds like the old name of the program and thats been changed to Gimp. =)

    1. Name - Gimping Along - Here's Gimp - ?
    2. Length - 5-7 pages to start
    3. Format - PDF - down-loadable and in HTML format
    4. Content - index page
    a) new scripts, plug-ins, and filters page
    b) news on the program, new releases, development, and bugs
    c) at least one new tutorial using new scripts from repository. And one just off the wall.
    d) cover and our logo (i was thinking Wilbur at a type-writer for logo)
    e) a Gimp trick of the month
    f) FAQ area where mag users can ask us by email for answers.

    5. The Overseer (all of us really) - we should vote on who edits which pages.
    6. The researchers - everyone gets involved
    7. The Editors - again goes with overseeing

i think that would be a good start on the first issue. =)

Nice idea, but you forgot something. I as a German do not have the English skills you would need to put into an English magazine. So you'd need someone to check grammar, phrases and so on as well.

I have an idea, I think in the first magazine we should have a section for Noob miscellaneous tips that a lot of people don't know about. Like the Rule of Thirds and stuff.

Actually, a permanent noob section might not be a bad idea.

Alright. Lets get going. For anyone who knows how to
do this whole PDF thing, it's up to you to put the pages together and prepare it in that format

We still need a name and logo! so start madly posting your rough drafts
(nothing big and elaborate, because it may not be selected)

    Okay. For pages
    1: Index
    2: Featured artist?
3: New Toys (aka, new scripts, plug-ins and filters)
4: Examples of these new "Toys" and their simple tutorials (we need decent representations!)
5: Featured Tutorial (a random yet awesome tut)
6: News Page (news on the program)
    7: Tricks and Tips/ FAQ
8: Noob Section (where to get gimp, where some good tuts are, basic stuff to get people interested)
    9: Ask us a Question
10: Associates, Links and Resources, Authors/Illustrators, Other

This is completely rough, no order at all. Anyone who adds to it, great, just give some feedback.

But to seem like something might actually happen, ASSIGNMENTS!
We need to find our cover emblem
We need to find some new scripts,plug-ins, and filters w/t tutorials
We need to find some decent art to put in as filler images and examples
A simple layout for the Noob section

    That'll do for now

Thanks for the support Rod ;D

lol@Pixelbean yeah lets not call it the noob section though, some folks might get offended. How about Newcomers or something like that.

Baum we could create the mag in German and English to start...maybe get some others from different countries to translate it into their languages later on. =)
It wouldn't take much...just create it in English first...send a copy to Baum and have Baum translate it all in German. Then as soon as both translations were ready to publish, we publish them both together.
All you would have to do is change the text in the editable files we create for the PDF transition, and recreate a new PDF file out of it.I do not know German or i would do it. =\

A great PDF creator is Scribus and it is open source and works on practically all platforms.
PDF Creator (Windows version),also is free here http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/

I also have a good first tutorial in mind created by PhotoMaster at Gimp Chat...a real cool puzzle tutorial. =)

I have decided to install all the language files which includes German, hope i can then copy it in different languages.

Ok i just found out Gimp can save in PDF if you save as print file/PDF
So all i needed was something that could merge all the PDF's from each xcf and i found it in PDFsam
    PDF Splice and Merge

I also found out InkScape can print in PDF vector...so i may use that instead with PDFsam...see how it goes.

Well.. If you need editors, I could help with the English parts. My grammar isn't 100% perfect, but I can have my grammar nazi moments.

I hope to get at least 7 participants in editing, and research.
I have the first cover draft about finished. You guys think mid
September for the first issue to be published? That should give
us plenty of time to finish the other pages.

I was thinking...we could do seven pages and have 1 editor for each page. This way we would all be involved, and if we all had a certain job each month we would become pros in our area.
Like for instance...i love doing the cover and would like that as my job.I cant really put any
details of whats inside on the cover until i know what you folks will be doing on your pages.

    Translate .. the whole .. thing ... into .. german ...
This would mean that I'd need every .XCF for every page, and I would have to edit every single Text layer on every page. That would take me a effin lot of time.
The Thing I originally meant was:
I want to write english articles for you, but my grammar and stuff sucks, so I'd need someone to correct me.

For the first site: It's okay, but the Colors aren't perfect in my opinion.
The noob section would be a great idea, we could make a "Ask the gimper team" thread inside this forum and add a link to it in the magazine.

Like a quotation section at the end with some "Master Yoda ... nah ... Konfuzius .. um ... Maffe sais: If you pee against the wind, shirt will become yellow!"

But seriously, who would ask YOU a question Maffe? (IRONY SENTENCE! BÄM!)

What about a "Signatures" and a "Inspirational work" section?

That cover template is just that folks a template.everything on it can be changed.Baum sorry i misread your post about the German translating. There will be an ask the editors area, and we should all be involved.

We need to get together 5-7 of us that are going to be committed first.
We can call it - The Gimper Committee i guess.
Every one gets a separate page or area in the mag to design. All of the 5-7 committee critique the pages together...like a board meeting.Once an editor thinks his/her page is finished it goes before the board for final scrutiny.

Some things we need to do right away are:
    1) Get 5-7 people together to form the board, we all have the same status, all are equal in leadership.
I can try and get a few awesome designers from Gimp Chat if we cannot get enough people here.
If you like.looks like we have 4 people so far?

    2) We need to decide exactly what topics we will use every issue. ie.....

    a) FAQ - answers from the editors (board), and the Gimp pros.
    b) New scripts and filters - their uses in your designs - pros and cons
    c) Featured Tutorial - no videos they must be in text and image form.
    d) Cover page - whats inside the magazine this month
    e) Development News - for Gimp - whats coming in future versions - bugs
    f) Index page - all content in the mag in order of appearance
    g) InSide Gimp - A page explaining a couple scripts that are in Gimp Now shipped with the bundle on install - like Iwarp and G'MIC for new folks to learn.New folk training more or less.

That should be enough for now, until we get into the swing of running the magazine.Too much too fast will sink it for sure.

Keep in mind the users will want to read the magazine every month on time.Just like a newspaper folks.
This could turn out to be a real great thing, to keep users of Gimp informed of all new developments in Gimp.It will help the entire Gimp community, everywhere!Especially if we can get other areas to translate it into their language!

I can edit the cover and the index

Every page designed goes before the board before publishing the magazine.Just like a real board.

What shouldn't be allowed in the magazine:
    Swearing
    Pornography
    Links to any commercial sites
Nothing goes in without permission from the creators (tutorials, and images)

If you can think of anything else post it please. =)
