After a solid 15 minutes of making passionate love to the Blend tool, and raping Gimper's Advance Orb tut to death, I got this:

I'm personally really hating it, especially the Earth in the center, which I will probably get rid of if I can't make it look at least somewhat decent, and might just scrap the thing altogether. Meh.

dude why did you have to "rape" the orb tutorial :'(

back to the topic here :D i like the earth in the middle its good but since its a 1024x  it you might have wanted abit smaller since its too big for the image area. but even though its still looking good  the way it is especialy the moon.

i would probably had the blend in the baclground black/darkgray instead of blue/darkblue ...

the rest is cool! keep up the good work. :D

It seems you were going for a starry effect.  Honestly, I'm a big fan of diffuse + curves for randomized stars, and scaling another, similar layer by 200% to make bigger stars.  Like what tigert does here: http://www.tigert.com/gimp/tutorials/the_bazaar_1999/

Mind you, that tutorial is outdated, but you should be able to take some of your knowledge of the current tools of GIMP to do that.

Blue is probably not the best color to use in this situation.

Ah, I found the images I used as an example:
