I placed the brushes in the brushes folder on mac, and nothing happened when I relaunched it...

Too bad I had to figure this out myself for hours this summer. This will help plenty of Gimpers

You can't find preferences? It's at the bottom of the edit menu. :)

The edit menu is in the actual GIMP window, not the Apple bar at the top. :)

When I download the brushes, I put them exactly where the guide said (on Windows) but they still won't appear in GIMP.

    Any thoughts?

Yes. When I open GIMP, the only brushes that appear are the default set.

I clicked on download, chose to save in the brushed folder in the location stated earlier, and clicked OK.

have you extracted the files? the folder is usually compressed like in .zip or .rar, extract them first and move only the items that have .gbr (gimp brush) to the brush folder of gimp.

Okay, I'll do that. Thanks for the help. Once I do that, is there anything else I need to do, or will gimp begin to pick them up?

    EDIT
That did the trick. Thanks so much for the help :)

if you extracted the contents of the folder, make sure to ONLY move the .GBR files to the brushes folder of gimp. re-open gimp or just refresh your brushes. :)
