So, I work with high res images, and I am an old school raster cat. In photoshop, I like to use enormous highly feathered erasers to take partially filled layers (and often gradient fills) back so as to create tasty soft transparent shapes. In Gimp, there is a limit to the maximum size of the eraser, that is actually pretty small when your working with an image 3000 x 3000 pixels. Is there a way to make the eraser larger? Or is there a way to create a gradient erase? The only solution I can use is to make an elipical selection, feather it, then move it, deleting as I go, but I would hope there is a way to find a more intuitive solution.

You can make a layer mask and use a black/white gradient to make a very fuzzy "erase".
BUT an easier way for you to get a very fuzzy and big eraser brush is creating an own one. It's very simple to do, just check out the Gimp Docs for it: <a class="postlink" href="http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-brush-dialog.html#gimp-brush-editor-dialog" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-brush-dial ... tor-dialog</a>
Here's an image of what it might look like (depending on your OS):

Set hardness all the way down, radius as high as you wanna go, and then save it as "Fuzzy". Now you can easily select your own brush for this kind of work.

In other things, if you're using Gimp 2.6, you might wanna take a look at 2.8. It has a maximum size increase of 1000 (or 100) as far as I remember, so you could switch to that, too.
