A follow up from my post here:
    viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1507
So I think we can do this. I can get something set up as to who is assigned what part based on how well/skilled they are at it. And if they're not, then, well, they'll have to learn. Alongside the PDF, I could also feature an online version, but it won't be as detailed (hence the value of downloading a PDF file).

But first, I'll going to need all of you to help me gather a list of what topics we should feature and what we shouldn't. Shouldn't as in irrelevant, not enough information to support it, stuff that might be too advanced for a beginner book, etc. (Yes I'm thinking about making an advanced book afterward if this one is successful enough...)

    So, whatcha guys think?

    Ideas will be posted here.
Be sure to check if your idea isn't already submitted before posting yours. Also be sure to include some form of a detailed description.

    1) Photoshop to Gimp Conversion
Great for people coming from Photoshop to Gimp. This includes tool conversion, filters, and other features that both programs have in common.

    2) The Beizer Tool
A sub section explaining the beizer tool and the many things that can be done with it.

    3) The Text Tool
Features the basics, such as just using the text tool, modifying your text, yet keeping it editable, and even more.

    4) Layers
A sub section explaining the layers function and the many things that can be done with it.

    5) PS & Gimp Plugins
A great list of plugins that work with the Gimp, and how to use them.

    6) The Gradient Tool
A sub section explaining the gradient tool and the many things that can be done with it.

    7) The Filters
    Section explaining Gimp Filters.

8.) A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Section
A section with Gimp's most frequently asked questions.

    9) GAP Help: Installation & Usage
A section about GAP (Gimp Animation Package) installation and usage.

    10) OS Differences
Installation, setup, directory structure, and any other differences in Gimp between operating systems. I don't think this'll be a different section, but something to add in in different areas of the book, like directory structures, where as the brushes folder is definitely in a different area on a Windows PC than a Linux, Mac, and so on.

    11) ...

DARN thats what my suggestion was going to be

    lol don't you mean description?

uhh yeah i would love to help with this whole thing

perhaps another section would be :

    Photoshop and Gimp Filters
A list and specific description of mutual and unique filters (a list of which filters gimp and ps share and which ones gimp has standalone)

yeah i meant description..ill fix that

I think PS and Gimp filters would fall under the PS>Gimp conversion sub section.

I have a feeling that PS>Gimp is going to be a huge topic..

    oh when you said

    "Photoshop to Gimp Tool Conversion"

i thought you meant strictly the tools themselves

running out of ideas already :p ... maybe a section dedicated to Text? Including text to path, coloring text, downloading fonts for gimp, blending text, making 3D looking text, etc.

    still thinking about it

having reviews of PS plugins that work with gimp would be great.
also having small tips on how to move layers, add path points, creating gradients etc would be great.

Yeah a section on text would be great. It can feature the basics, such as just using the text tool, modifying your text, yet keeping it editable, and even more, like you mentioned Ajit.

PS plugins that work with gimp would be good too, except the fact that new plugins are created everyday, and keeping up with them would be kinda hard to do, but i think if we listed the major ones that work, that might bring some insight to Gimp users.

We can give Layers its own subtopic, seeing as there is so much you can do with them. The Beizer tool will definitely have it's own section. Such a powerful tool needs it. Gradient tool can have it's own too.

but if anything, we should ask the community (newcomers in the community) what they feel they have the most questions about. we could also see about taking a few from gimp's official site.
    http://www.gimp.org/docs/userfaq.html

of course we'll probably have to get permission first. ^-^

I think that this should be put into a wiki format. If its a wiki anyone can add what they know whenever they want.

what do you guys think?

no. a forum is more organized. we're making it into an ebook, not a wiki. we already have a gimp wiki, and it doesnt really help. the ebook will be more organized and completely made by the community for all to view. right now we're just deciding what we think we should have as topics in the book, and then I will assign who is writing what. once everyone's written what they want, i and a select few will edit, correct, etc and i will put together the book. :D

    @Siddharth:

Yep, GAP will do well. A lot of people have been asking about GAP. We should probably include how to install, set up, use, etc. As far as tutorials go, we won't have any. They only ones we'll have will be with the explanations of everything. As I said before, I might think about starting an advanced book after this one, if it turns out good. But hey, I like the idea of making a "Best of Gimp Tutorials" book. The only thing is I don't want to do that yet, as Gimp 2.5 and 2.6 will be released shortly, and I'd like to wait until after those are released before anything like that is made.
