Actually you can get a pretty good taste of Gimp-2.8 by downloading Parthas newest compile of Gimp-2.7.3.
    New in Gimp-2.7.3 compile -
    SVG import now works
    Themes work
Single window mode saves like it should
    This version is quite stable

You can get it in 32 bit or 64 bit regular, and portable versions at his site.
    <a class="postlink" href="http://partha.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://partha.com/</a>

Plus Partha has compiled many of the useful plug-ins for Gimp-2.7.3 like Resynthesizer, all the wavelet filters, and GMIC 1.4.9.3.

Example image in single window mode.
