When I use Tools like Brush in GIMP there are big delays in the tool's response time from when I move the mouse until the brush cursor responds to my movement. I don't believe that this is the way GIMP should be on OS X.

    I am running OS X 10.6.6, X11 XQuartz 2.3.6 and 64bit GIMP 2.6.11 from http://gimp.lisanet.de/Website/News/News.html

I have a 2.93GHz Core 2 Duo with 4GB ram, so my hardware shouldn't be the issue. I've tweaked GIMP's Preferences/Environment/Resource Consumption/Tile Cache to 2GB so it should have plenty of ram. I don't know what the problem is. This tool latency issue is really ruining a great app.

    Any help appreciated, thanks.

I don't know how to solve your problem but I can assure you that Gimp is not lagging at all if your computer is at least decent (and yours is ;)). I run Gimp on Ubuntu 10.04 and on Windows XP, and it's not at all laggy on one of the OSs (2 x 2.22 GHz Intel processor, 4GB RAM).

You must be aware though that if you use a very big/detailed brush + you're scaling it up by 10x (brush size set to 10), the program will start lagging because rendering the preview of the brush takes a lot of processor power. Try changing the brush settings to a lower size and see whether the problems still occur.

    Thanks for the responses

It happens with very simple setups: fresh startup, new blank white canvas 640x400px, brush scale 1.00

Any ideas how that resolved itself?

I just download the OS X 10.6.7 update and I think the issue is fixed ! ;D

I did a couple of quick tests and there's no lag.

Thanks for your help guys. ;)

I have the same problems with GIMP 2.6.11 at times. My computer is more than fast enough but every now and then GIMP slows down horribly, taking as long as 5-10 minutes to save a file that usually only takes seconds.

I notice this happens most often when I have multiple GIMP drawings open and sometimes when I leave GIMP open and play a quick session of an online game. I go back to the still open GIMP program and it responds like molasses. Task Manager says is Not Responding but it is in fact working, just incredibly laggy. I close the program and re-start it and things seem fine.

    Using Windows XP.

    I would suggest:
    Use gimp
    Save image
    Close gimp
    Play game
    Save game
    Close game
    Open gimp

Nice and easy fix, dont multitask more than your pc can do!
Worst case for me is gimp, music and firefox for finding resources!

Are you trying to use a large brush?
