No, it doesn't auto update, and yes it's a stable release, it's part of 2.6, not 2.7.

Just a little update about the font selector in 2.6.9
If you use your mouse wheel to select font type it will work fine.
IF however you just select an up or down arrow in the scroll bar selector window you will crash the program entirely.

I tried to switch a few XML files from the menu folder in 2.6.8 but that didn't work.

I have submitted a bug report to Bugzilla about it already.
Just wanted to let you guys know IF you still want to use 2.6.9 use your mouse wheel to select your font type.
Also this is the Windows 32 bundle, not sure about Mac or any others.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.
This particular bug has already been reported into our bug tracking system, but
we are happy to tell you that the problem has already been fixed. It should be
solved in the next software version. You may want to check for a software
    upgrade.

*** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 622608 ***

------- You are receiving this mail because: -------
    You reported the bug.

so evidently its been resolved, although i downloaded the bundle again and it still crashes.I assume they will just be adding the fix to 2.8 later on.

If you all have a problem running third party plug-ins, try installing InkScape, as i have heard the dll file needed is installed with it.

I just installed the newest 2.6.8 and did my first few things in the last days.
Would you recommend me downloading 2.6.9 then or should I rather first get a grip on my current version.

And if I install it, does it overinstall or can I run both on my PC.

So I can work with my present one, where I know my way about already and find out about the new one in my sparetime

2.7.1 is the latest version, installing 2.6.9 will not uninstall any other GIMP programs you have installed...HOWEVER...
downloading and installing GIMP 2.7.1 WILL uninstall all previous 2.6.9 versions you have installed.
the problem with 2.6.9 is the combo boxes, you crash GIMP if you use the selector scroll bars in any of them. You can use your mouse wheel to select without any problems though.
i decided to just dl and install 2.7.1 for Windows, runs great and has single window mode, and is python enabled.
if i had a choice to run either 2.6.8 or 2.6.9 id choose 2.6.8 myself. =)
2.6.9 had no new changes, just bug fixes and one of those fixes caused the combo box crash.

as for language change you have a choice to either choose language on install, or
    Windows XP

Control Panel → System → Advanced → Environment button in “System Variables” area: Add button: Enter LANG for Name and fr or de... for Value. Watch out! You have to click on three successive OK to validate your choice.

If you change languages often, you can create a batch file to change the language. Open NotePad. Type the following commands (for french for instance):

    set lang=fr
    start gimp-2.6.exe

Save this file as GIMP-FR.BAT (or another name, but always with a .BAT extension). Create a shortcut and drag it to your desktop.

Another possibility: Start → Programs → GTK Runtime Environment Then Select language and select the language you want in the dropdown list.

you can find these directions at the gimp manual site also..chapter 2 - 1.2
    http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-fire-u ... g-language

    hope this helps
