ive been trying to download fonts and brushes for gimp and when i do if it is a zip file my computer starts blinking and multiplying pages like crazy. i have to shut it down and reboot every time. i dont seem to have problems with rar downloads but i cant find fonts and brushes for that.
i use vista 64 bit with chrome and gimp 2.6.

The fonts zips are weird? Gimp reads font files just okay if they are placed in the correct Gimp folders.

So the problem is downloading zips? Or when you try and open them?

it happens right away when i download them. it does wait around long enough for me to open or save it.
and ive also noticed that an internet explorer page is blinking in and out even though im in chrome. ive tried sending explorer to the trash can but that didnt work. so i brought explorer back and tried to use that browser then go get the downloads but no dice. im wondering if i have a conflict with the rar and zip files somehow?

yes i did try it with IE. It seemed worst as the pages multiplied so fast i wasnt able to shut the computer down. had to pull the plug.

Is Winrar set up to open zip files? If it is try un-associating it.

well i went in and looked around but couldnt find any place to turn that off. but i did discover that is a trail version that i down loaded over a year ago. why it still works i dont know. but the extract box does come up when i download stuff for the online racing that i do. maybe i should download a different compression software?

If im not wrong you download WinRar as a X ammount of days trial, but it works even after the limit is reached.

ya your right Maffe811. it said 40 days free trial.
i forgot all about it til i was trying to download fonts and brushes for GIMP and had this issue. it seemed to download rar fine. but i dont think WiRar is the problem now cause im still having the issue with 7-z. i'll just keep tryin things til something works.

thanks for all your help. im getting closer. i downloaded the cleaner and did that whole gig. the computer still blinks the IE page after downloading a zip, and i have to reboot after each download. But the good news is that its making it to my downloads file where i can unzip it and drag the file into the GIMP fonts file and it works. plus my computer is a lil faster too. it was pretty fast to begin with but anything a little faster than before is a win in my eyes. lol......thanks again

While we're on the speeding things up page, here's a little tip:
Diskdefragmentation is a good thing to do.
Its built into windows but i was suggested Defragler (by piriform, which also made ccleaner) by an IT guy once.

I regulary run Ccleaner and Defragler and my old pc outran all my old classmates (we had the same pc) and my current pc outruns all my classmates pc (again, same pc, its just that i care more for mine).

If you work with you're pc you could run a ccleaner-defragler-combo on each sunday night and it will be ready to go on monday! :)

Back to your problem!
I would maybe get a malwarebytes trial and check for possible spyware and computer-crap...
Run a antivirus scan, maybe. Just to see if you have crap that f's stuff up.

Why do you have to reboot?

I really ain't sure what the issue is... but we'll try to help as much as possible! :)

I think i solved the problem. Here's what i ran across in case anybody else has this issue.

i went to:
control panel - default settings - associate a file type or protocol with a program. Then scrolled down to .zip and it was assigned to internet explorer in which i do not use. I use chrome as my browser. So i changed it to my winrar program and it works fine. Thats explains why the IE page kept blinking up when i tried to download a zip. It was trying to find IE but couldn't.

As you can see i'm often the pioneer in computer problems and a greenhorn at solving them. I stumbled across it and had help in solving this mystery. I want to thank David Woods, Maffe811, gimpeRaven and Tim @ PC Support Forum from About.com. http://forums.about.com/n/pfx/forum.asp ... -pcsupport. Now on to my next problem. lol
